Targeted Observable Initiative

“Exploring next-generation measurement approaches ready for spaceborne implementation.”

The 2017-2027
Decadal Survey
The 2017-2027 Decadal Survey recommended high-resolution global topography as a targeted observable (TO). This encompasses bare surface land topography, ice topography, vegetation structure, and shallow water bathymetry.
Targeted observables address key priorities within and across disciplinary lines for a set of science objectives related to a common aspect of the Earth system. STV science goals call for exploring next-generation measurement approaches that could be ready for spaceborne implementation within the decade.
Key Targeted Observables

Bare Surface

High-resolution land topography mapping across global terrains.

Ice Topography

Monitoring vertical changes in global ice structures and sheets.

Vegetation

Mapping vegetation structure and biomass density globally.

Bathymetry

Mapping shallow water depths for coastal and marine science.
CSR & The STV Community
CSR is an integral part of the STV community, working collaboratively for the general advancement of this new type of Earth observing system.
Our research focuses on coastal geomorphology and advanced data fusion techniques to enable next-generation global bathymetry capabilities. By integrating diverse measurement approaches, we aim to deliver the high-resolution data required by the scientific community.
